All’s fair in love… and cold war

In the icy heart of the Cold War, an undercover agent and a loyal comrade are given a simple task: charm, deceive, and extract state secrets. But what happens when the line between mission and emotion blurs? As their staged dates rack up (on the company card, naturally), half-truths give way to real feelings — and the greatest risk becomes falling in love.

After selling out last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, Belvedere Productions brings a fresh, funny take on espionage with A Covert Affair — a cold war romantic comedy packed with secrets, seduction, and sabotage.

Created by rising talents Alex Macfarlane and Charlie Turner, A Covert Affair promises whip-smart dialogue, high-stakes tension, and a heartwarming twist on the classic spy story.

Macfarlane, an alum of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and the University of Manchester. His critically praised solo show in 2024 at the Edinburgh Fringe drew acclaim for its “clever and compelling” storytelling (The Wee Review), as well as A Covert Affair selling out its 2025 run.. With a background in acting, directing, and youth theatre work, Macfarlane continues to craft rich, daring theatrical experiences.

Ella Sheree is a graduate actor from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Ella is thrilled to be back playing Comrade after Covert’s sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, previous credits include ‘Sleeping Beauty: Panto of your dreams’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’ since graduating.

Joseph Mihranian is also a graduate from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Joseph is taking on the role of Agent and very excited to be part of the team. Joseph’s previous credits include BBC Ones ‘Gentleman Jack’ and The Guest List band’s music video ‘When the Lights are out’.

Catch A Covert Affair at Hope Street Theatre on 8^th and 9^th of August, Oxford Playhouse on the 13^th and 14^th of August, Old Red Lion Theatre on the 6^th 7^th and 8^th of September and The Swan Theatre Worcester on the 17^th and 18^th of September.
