Italian playwright, performer and theatre director Antonella Fittipaldi brings SCALENO – One Body, Three Voices to Liverpool Fringe 2026, performing at The Studio Beyond from 15 to 17 October at 6:00 pm.
Performed in Italian, Neapolitan and English, with English surtitles, the show sees Fittipaldi alone on stage performing three distinct characters: a 41-year-old woman unable to live in the present, her fierce Neapolitan alter ego, and a British AI smart speaker.
Although one of the characters is an artificial intelligence, every line spoken on stage has been written by Fittipaldi herself. The AI is not a technological tool, but a theatrical character: a detached voice that analyses, questions and interrupts the protagonist as she attempts to reconstruct her own story.
Moving between dark comedy, autobiography and psychological drama, SCALENO explores memory, shame, desire, queer identity and the ways in which people become trapped between what has already happened and what has not happened yet.
At the centre of the performance is a simple question: what if surviving is not the same as living?
Liverpool was a deliberate stop in the show’s UK journey. As a Neapolitan artist, Fittipaldi recognises something familiar in Scouse identity: its physicality, humour and the way local identity lives through language. She has resisted performing SCALENO entirely in English because the Neapolitan voice is inseparable from the character’s identity.
“Liverpool wasn’t an accidental stop. I specifically wanted to bring SCALENO here. As a Neapolitan, there is something in Scouse identity that feels strangely familiar to me: the physicality, the humour and the way local identity lives through language. I’ve always resisted performing SCALENO entirely in English because the Neapolitan voice would lose part of who she is. But if I ever did an English-language version, I already know she would be Scouse,” says Fittipaldi.
Founded by Fittipaldi in 2008, La Nuda Compagnia has produced original theatre productions and multidisciplinary projects in Italy for almost twenty years. SCALENO – One Body, Three Voices made both the company’s and the artist’s UK debut at Camden Fringe 2026.
